Calculation of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions

Our methodology complies with Bilan Carbone and ISO14064 standards. We're always striving to improve our methodology and keep it in line with the latest industry standards.

Therefore, we consider material factors that contribute to GHG emissions: fuel, food, waste.

  1. Emissions from Fuel: Our calculations for fuel-related emissions follow the guidelines set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). We take into account factors such as the type of aircraft, freight, passenger load factor and flight distance to determine emissions.
  2. Waste Disposal: Emissions linked to the disposal generated by the flight are included in our assessment.
  3. Food and Beverages: Emissions from food and beverage consumption during the flight are factored in.

Scoring

  1. Emissions Per Person and Local Impact: The class you travel in and the number of passengers on board are used to estimate individual emissions. We compare it to the average emissions per person in your country and the local cost of carbon. This gives you a sense of the environmental impact from a regional perspective.
  2. Airline's Environmental Efforts: The carbon score also takes into account the airline's efforts to reduce emissions.
  3. Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF): We acknowledge the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) in our approach. SAF is an important part of the solution to reducing aviation-related carbon emissions.

Noise reduction

We evaluate the compliance of the airline with international standards and regulations, as well as their initiatives to reduce noise (partnership with local communities, adapted fleet, night flights restrictions,...).

Waste management

We take into account the availability of the information, the amount of hazardous and non-hazardous waste produced, waste reduction goals of the airline and their recycling policy.

Climate impact is 50% of the grade.

GHG emissions per occupied room are benchmarked against daily usual emissions per capita of the traveller’s departure country, and further evaluated using the carbon price. This section also takes into account the number of green features the hotel has (such as bicycle rental, solar panels, waste recycling,...), as well its non-sustainable features (such as heated pools, golf courses, outdoor heating,...), and more generally, the hotel’s sustainability policy.

Resources protection is 40% of the grade.

This section focuses on the main resource impacted by hotels, water. In particular, we evaluate the water stress of a hotel stay and the general resource policy of the hotel. We define water stress as the water consumed divided by the water available. The calculation method we elaborated takes into account the country’s water usage, its industrial and agricultural water withdrawal, its population, the evolution of its water reservoirs, the environmental flow requirement, and much more. The grade is then derived from the value using the following benchmark:

Respect for local communities is 10% of the grade.

We assess a hotel’s consideration for local communities through its policies and initiatives, utilizing key terms that suggest either respect or disregard.
